Chiropractic Care

Infancy is the time when the greatest brain and proprioceptive development takes place, which means taking care of the nervous system is of utmost importance. Infants are adjusted by hand and/or an adjustive device while either lying on a pillow or on the parent. Adjustments are simple, safe, and so extremely gentle that they can often be performed while baby is sleeping! Some common baby or childhood concerns that may be improved through chiropractic care include the following:

• Constipation
• Ear infections
• Colic
• Asthma
• Allergies
• Headaches
• Bedwetting

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on modality that releases tension in the body that may have been caused by restricted movements in utero, a difficult pregnancy, or birth trauma. Releasing tension throughout the body can improve whole body function and well being.

The focus of CST is a gentle placement of hands to assist release of the body’s connective tissue, or “fascia.” Fascia is a covering found throughout the body including organs, glands, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, brain and spinal cord. This covering forms a body-wide connective network. CST is based on the idea that the body is interrelated at all levels.

The therapy was developed by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger after years of clinical testing and research at Michigan State University where he served as professor of biomechanics.

Craniosacral Therapy is one of the most gentle yet effective modalities available for newborns.

Most of the referrals for CST are from paediatricians and lactation consultants who have an awareness of the positive impact that this modality can have on babies, but you do not need a referral for CST. The therapy can help a newborn for a variety of issues, whether it be for improved sleep, painful latch, feeding, colic, flat head, among others.

A typical treatment plan is between 1- 8 sessions. Early intervention is recommended but it is never too late to implement Craniosacral Therapy for your baby or child.

Osteopathy / Manual Therapy

Osteopathy can be a wonderful manual treatment for infants, and in most cases can help alleviate many symptoms. Some of the many conditions that can be successfully treated with osteopathy in babies include the following: • Colic • Constipation • Regurgitation • Latching / feeding difficulties • Mouth breathing • Torticollis • Plagiocephaly • Limited neck mobility • Sleeping disorders • Confusing days and nights • Ear/nose/throat concerns such as frequent ear infections As the baby grows, osteopathy can continue to be a very valuable treatment throughout childhood. Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists (OTs) assess an infant or child’s development with a focus on their “occupations”. For infants and children, their main occupations include:
• Play
• Eating
• Sleeping
• Building Independence in Self-care Activities
• Successfully participating in programs such as childcare or school
Occupational Therapists help with working towards meeting an individual child’s developmental goals and milestones. As play being one of the main occupations for any child, we use a fun, play-based approach to assessment and intervention with the child. We also coach caregivers to feel confident in their abilities to support their child in their own environments. Areas of focus may include:
• Fine motor: Examples can include using both hands together, reaching and grasping toys, coordination of small finger movements required for self-help activities, handwriting, holding a pencil and using scissors.
• Self-help: Examples can include self-feeding, getting dressed, bathing and brushing teeth.
• Feeding: Examples can include managing textures, transitioning to solids, independently feeding, using utensils, picky eating, positioning, chewing and swallowing.
• Sensory processing: How we process sensory input in the environment (Example children may be over or under sensitive to input involving sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell and movement)
• Visual-motor: Coordinating the body’s movements based on what the eyes perceive.
• Play: Examples can include how to play, developmental stages of play, toy selection and motor skills for play.
• Cognition: Thinking and planning for what is needed for daily functioning (Example: learning, organization, problem solving, focus and attention)
• Self-regulation: How we manage our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
• Social skills: How we interact with others.

Registered Massage Therapy

"Massage therapy can benefit both infants and children in many ways. For infants, massage can help reduce the symptoms of gas, colic, and constipation, while also aiding in digestion and improving blood flow circulation. It can also release Oxytocin, which is the Nurturing or love hormone. This helps baby feel safe and relaxed which will in turn promote good sleep. Children of all ages can also benefit. It can be effective and healing for children experiencing the following:
• Diabetes
• Asthma
• Skin issues
• Arthritic problems
• Immune system deficiencies
• Hyperactivity disorders
• Athletic injuries
• Growing pains
• Stress
• Depression
• Anxiety"
