What is a Doula?

A Doula is a specially trained birthing coach that provides support during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Through their professional skills and experience, Doulas help guide parents through a pregnancy, teach them how to have a more confident and joyous birth, and show them the ins and outs of parenting a newborn.

With its name originating from ancient Greek, Doulas have been serving expectant mothers for a very long time. These days, what once was a role filled in by extended family and community members has evolved into a specialist that is certified through accredited programs and proper training to help you have the best experience possible.

As a labour support person, this specialist has the purpose of making a mother feel safer and stronger throughout the labour and birthing experience. They provide empowerment through their physical and emotional tools, and comfort through their knowledge.

This role can be categorized into two main categories: the Birth Doula, that provides pregnancy and childbirth support, and the Postpartum Doula that provides support for the time after childbirth. Doulas can be trained in one specialty, or in both.

What does a Birth Doula do?

A Birth Doula provides support and assistance to an expectant mother during pregnancy and childbirth. Their goal is to educate you and your partner to make sure you both have a full understanding of all available options, and know what to expect throughout your pregnancy and birth.

This birthing coach will empower you to choose the birth experience you want, and be ready for any circumstance. With the help of a Birth Doula, you’ll receive the confidence you need to enjoy the miraculous journey of childbirth. They help enhance your partner’s role during the birthing process, taking over to temporarily relieve the partner so as to be able to best help you when you need it.

Birth Doulas work in tandem with doctors and midwives to better your childbirth experience, working in birthing suites that include hospitals, clients’ homes, or in the Toronto Birthing Centre with Midwifery Care. For mommies who have cesarean births, a Birth Doula is trained to provide you with exceptional support. They stay with you in the operating theatre to answer your questions, giving you the opportunity to have your wishes heard while your care providers make sure you and your baby are safe.

What does a Postpartum Doula do?

A Postpartum Doula is a specialist that supports mothers and their babies with professional care after the delivery. Their purpose is to provide families with confidence and affirmation in order to get them to a place where they are comfortable and ready to move forward on their own

Examples of the work performed by Postpartum Doulas include:

• Feeding, bathing, rocking, or soothing your baby to give mothers personal time to shower, nap, or have a meal.

• Providing help with laundry for the baby, meal preparation for mom, playing with older children, and even with breastfeeding.

• Overnight support to let parents comfortably rest while knowing the baby will be cared for during wake times.

The role of the Postnatal Doula adapts with the changing needs of your family. Your Doula will effectively coach you to become the experts of your baby. The Doula offers the tools, education and support that new mothers need to face the emotional impact of depression and isolation in the postpartum period. The Postnatal Doula provides the necessary support based upon your needs and desires as a family in order to guide you without judgement, and instill you with self-confidence.

What are the benefits of using a Doula?

Follow these stDoulas can have a tremendous impact on the families that they serve, bringing with them such positive benefits such as:

• Increased breastfeeding success

• Enhanced parenting confidence;

• Improved family relationships;

• Faster healing with education in self-care after birth;
