Our Naturopathic Medicine and Chiropractic Teams offer acupuncture treatments as part of their comprehensive approach to health care.

Acupuncture is a treatment that has been around for thousands of years! It is a gentle and effective therapy to support health and well-being. Acupuncture can have many benefits across a variety of areas including:

  • Balancing nervous system
  • Preparing for labour and birth

  • Pain Management
  • Hormonal balance & Menstrual concerns

Fertility Services

Whether you are just beginning your journey to conception or have been trying for a while, Acupuncture can help.
Fertility concerns commonly treated with Acupuncture include:

• Painful intercourse
• Low Libido
• Reduce stress and anxieties
• Balance hormones

For those going through assisted reproductive therapies such as IUI or IVF, studies have shown acupuncture increases successful pregnancy rates. Preparing ahead with acupuncture 2-3 months before IVF helps to regulate the menstrual cycle, thicken the uterine lining to support implantation and improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries.

Men can also benefit from acupuncture to increase fertility. Common concerns that may be treated with Acupuncture in males include:

• Low sperm count
• Problems with sperm motility or morphology
• Erectile Dysfunction
• Low testosterone
• Varicocele

Pregnancy Care

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of common pregnancy concerns such as:
• Morning sickness
• Swelling and edema
• Pain in the back or pelvis
• High blood pressure
• Insomnia
• Relax and calm the body and mind
One of the most important times to have acupuncture during pregnancy is the third trimester, to help prepare the body for labour. Pre-birth acupuncture helps to relax and soften the uterine ligaments and bring blood flow to the pelvis, encouraging baby to descend and preparing the cervix to soften and dilate and the uterine muscles to contract when needed.
Benefits of pre-birth acupuncture include:
• Increased likelihood of spontaneous labour, reducing the likelihood of induction
• Reduced risk of medical intervention
• May promote a faster and easier birth (studies suggest 1.5 hours shorter!)
• Relax the body and calm any fears or anxiety
• Helps encourage babies into their optimal position for birth

Postpartum Care

Acupuncture can help nurture new parents by boosting energy, supporting mood and managing common discomforts that may occur. Postpartum concerns that are commonly treated with acupuncture include:
• Promoting optimal milk supply
• Reduction of pain
• Scar healing
• Painful, heavy or irregular periods
• PMS
• Endometriosis
• Uterine Fibroids
• Postpartum depletion / Low energy
• Postpartum anxiety / depression

Pediatric Services

For our babies and young children, our team is able to provide some of the benefits of acupuncture by doing acupressure, which is a needle free technique. This can even be demonstrated to parents so they can continue to use the techniques at home. Acupuncture may also be performed in children as young as ten years old to help with concerns such as pain, stress & anxiety, sleep, headaches, and digestion.

Family Services

Acupuncture can be a valuable and gentle treatment for a wide range of concerns across the entire family. Commonly it is used for energy, sleep, digestion, mood (stress, anxiety, depression), menstrual symptoms, migraines, headaches and pain management. For infants and children, or those who prefer needle-free techniques, acupressure techniques can be applied and demonstrated for at-home use.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture

Acupuncture helps to stimulate the nervous system through the insertion of very tiny needles specific points in the skin, which trigger the brain to alter its hormonal output in order to reduce pain, calm the nervous system, and help balance hormones.

Typically no. Most people find acupuncture quite relaxing, and many fall asleep during the treatment! Some individuals may feel some heaviness or warmth around certain points, but generally acupuncture is quite painless.

No, but it does aid in the body’s natural preparation for childbirth. The goal of Acupuncture prior to labour is to bring blood flow to the pelvis, encouraging baby to descend while also preparing the cervix to soften and dilate and the uterine muscles to contract, but only when your body and baby are ready!

Yes. In fact, acupuncture has been used to treat a number of nausea-related symptoms, including morning sickness. It is also used in the treatment of other conditions such as heartburn and joint pain, to name a few.

Yes! Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique that involves burning an herb over various acupuncture points. Our Naturopathic Doctors most commonly use moxibustion in combination with acupuncture to help encourage breech babies to turn into the head down position before birth.

Acupuncture is provided under Chiropractic and Naturopathic Medicine, as well as a stand alone service.. Find out the availability, pricing and booking options for this service.
